HIV infections in Gia Lai still rise
VGP - The numbers of HIV carriers, AIDS patients and fatalities in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai have continued to increase, according to the provincial HIV/AIDS Prevention and Fight Center.
Gia Lai recorded 19 cases of HIV infections, 11 AIDS patients in the first half of this year, raising the total figures to 643 and 232, respectively.
Now, 125 out of 222 communes, wards and towns in Gia Lai have HIV carriers, most of them are in the age of 20-39. Up to 78.8% of HIV carriers are men.
Analysis shows that the province’s HIV infection is mainly transmitted through drug injection and sex relations while competent agencies have yet taken effective measures to prevent it.
Besides, discrimination is still high agianst HIV/AIDs carriers, making it difficult for them to re-integrate into the communities.
The province is striving to realize, by 2015, the targets of having no HIV new infections, no AIDS fatalities and no discriminations against people living with HIV/AIDS. To this end, it is speeding up communications about HIV/AIDS prevention and fight.
